Activism
Hartley has been referred to be “a guiding force for a generation of feminist porn stars” and a “outspoken feminist, sex educator and advocate for sexual freedom” by Las Vegas Weekly. Both “classical liberal feminist” and “democratic socialist” are terms she has used to characterize herself. In the 1980s, Hartley was involved in feminist activism. She has said: “Based on my experience as a woman and a sexual being, and my understanding that I had the right to decide for myself what to do with my life – that’s what I understood to be feminist, to give everybody choices – I didn’t choose to be a mother, but I chose this [porn] because it suits me.”
In addition to his involvement in socialist activity, Hartley has been a member of the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee (APAC), a labor organization established in 2014 for actors in pornographic films.
Hartley has served on the boards of the Woodhull Freedom Foundation (established in 2003) and the Free Speech Coalition since 1995. She has frequently advocated for sex positivity in the media, at workshops, and at academic conferences. She has given lectures at Dartmouth College, Harvard University, and the University of California.
Writing
Together with her husband Ira Levine, Hartley co-wrote Nina Hartley’s Guide to Total Sex in 2006. Swinging, threesomes, dominance and submission, sexual spanking, and sex toys are all covered in the book. According to the Library Journal, Hartley “handles the material frankly, accurately, and with sensitivity” in this “well-written guide” that is “strong on both safe sex and a permissive approach.”

In 2003, she married director Ernest Greene.
